I have just read the "Martin County" complaint, which is similar to the Seminole County action (the docs are available at www.decision2000.msnbc.com). Here, the allegation is that Republican Party workers were allowed to remove, in some cases for several days, signed invalid absentee ballot applications from the election office to change the information on them; following these alterations the applications were then resubmitted and absentee ballots were issued by the Republican election official. These special arrangements were not offered to any other party.

Now how's this for a scary scenario:

1. The Florida Courts throw out some/all of the Martin/Seminole County absentee ballots on the grounds the process was tainted.

2. Al Gore wins the contest action as a result of 1.

3. The Florida legislature goes ahead with their threat to declare an alternative slate of (Republican) electors irrespective of 2. Jeb Bush signs the applicable act.

4. Since there are two slates of Electors for Florida, Congress now has to decide which one counts. All hell breaks loose, particularly since Gore has the deciding vote in the Senate and Lieberman is one of the Senators.

Have a nice weekend!
