"But to me the real beauty of having a GbE link is not so much that anyone will pack it with data consistenty, but that you can burst data at low duty cycle and have a greatly simplified QoS scheme for all but ultra-low-delay apps ..."

Yes, that's a good point. It would allow a "breather" period where QoS could be enjoyed because of the increased head room allowed by GbE.

But how long would this last if it was merely by default, i.e., because traffic was relatively low during the beginning stages? Sooner or later turnpike takes over (it "always" does) and the pipe fills. You still have the same old problem, only it's two years from now instead of today.

"... which is a good benefit since there is no native QoS for ethernet ..."

This may not be the case in future standards releases. There is already a movement afoot to introduce QoS/CoS in the higher speed Ethernets. There are several vendors who have formed a working group to introduce standards in this regard, and several vendors are already boasting basic QoS features. Some are actually calling for doing synchronous bandwidth (T1-like) emulation. FDDI was to use these capabilities in its second generation, which never quite made it out of the standards groups. I don't think that 10GbE will have that problem.

Imagine that? Synchronous bandwidth emulation and QoS over Ethernet. What a hoot! Good work, Rob (Metcalfe). Bet you didn't even know you had it in ya.
