Tandberg and Telenor to Deliver Broadcast Quality MPEG-2 Over IP Significant consumer trials of Tandberg's MPEG over IP technology to deliver broadcast quality TV, video on demand and Personal Video Recorder services over IP networks OSLO, NORWAY (November 30, 2000) -- Tandberg Television today announced that it is partnering with Telenor to conduct end-user trials of broadcast quality TV over an IP (Internet Protocol) broadband network. The trials, which will commence in December 2000 and conclude in March 2001, will form part of Telenor's field tests of its broadband full service network (FSN) and will offer consumers an exciting new way of receiving entertainment and information. These trials will complement Telenor's TV trials over VDSL/ATM. The Tandberg Television/Telenor trials will provide consumers with a wide choice of multimedia services including digital TV; Video on Demand, live and scheduled broadcasts and Personal Video Recorder (PVR) services via a PC linked to a set-top-box (STB). Field trial users in Oslo, Norway, will be connected to the services via broadband access technologies such as VDSL and LMDS. The trials will see the deployment of the new Tandberg Television IP MultiStreamer, which enables broadcasters, telcos and communications companies to cost effectively distribute MPEG-2 broadcast streams over IP networks. "The aim of the field tests is to demonstrate how effectively the Telenor full service broadband network (FSN) can be used to distribute broadcast quality TV signals, as well as value-added service such as video on demand. We are delighted to be working with Tandberg Television on these trials and to be able to benefit from the company's advanced IP MultiStreamer Technology," says Bjørn Netland, FSN Project Manager, Telenor AS. "A key success factor for any broadband network is the ability to deliver broadcast quality TV programming and interactive services. By utilizing Tandberg's MPEG over IP technology, the IP MultiStreamer is able to deliver all of the separate MPEG-2 TV programs and services to consumers accessing the broadband network via a variety of devices," says Joergen Bredesen, CEO of Tandberg Television. The Tandberg Television IP MultiStreamer is a plug and play system that combines a highly integrated receiver and descrambling solution with new MPEG-2 processing elements. The IP MultiStreamer can receive, decode, descramble and process transmissions from a digital satellite transponder, digital cable head-end or digital terrestrial transmitter to provide national and regional TV services to consumers on xDSL networks. The IP MultiStreamer takes the MPEG-2 stream, which consists of a multiplex of digital TV programs, and splits the stream into single program streams, which are then transmitted as IP Multicast sessions over the xDSL network. "Broadband networks and broadband access technologies like ADSL and VDSL are already being deployed and alliances are being formed around the world to use such networks for the delivery of TV and multimedia services to the home. By placing the majority of the decoding and translation functionality at the network head-end, our IP MultiStreamer means that less complex set-top boxes are required in the home. This enables faster and more cost-effective upgradeability, both of which are crucially important when scaled over a large consumer operation," says Olav Bungum, Director of Broadband at Tandberg Television.
