The thermal drop through the silicon wafer to the package is 60% of conventional silicon at 100 degrees C. However, this 40% savings is not 30 degrees C for a 1 GHZ processor. It may be 30 degrees C at an operating temperature of -70 degrees C where the improvement effect is larger. Kryotech is the beneficiary, but will a company like AMD use a special wafer for the Kryotech market? A 30 degree improvement amounts to how much in the amount of total heat that can be dissapated? It is difficult to estimate because the properties of the thermoelectric cooler come into it. If the dissapation is doubled, this could me double the clock frequency (providing the chip can handle it). This would be outstanding and a real boon to cooled systems. A 3 Ghz cooled Palomino?
