I have been listening to a series of tapes on American History put out by the Teaching Company, which does excellent work taping the best college profs in the country. I have found them uniformly excellent.

This prof, Staloff I think is his name (tape is in the car, not here) was clear that virtually every home in the early years of the colonies had arms. That was one of the distinguishing characteristics of early American society, and one reason why the common people (not the nobility) left England where they were NOT allowed to carry weapons. It was a few tapes ago, so I probably couldn't find the exact quote (harder to find in tapes than in a book), but it struck me because of the discussion we had been having here.
