I actually saw the concert on tv, but was somewhat disappointed. Some of the artists were great, notably George Harrison and Tom Petty, but mostly it was a relief when Dylan turned up to perform. Somehow, it was hard for many of the performers to find the right take on each song. Plus, there were too many deservedly obscure songs showcased.
By the way, did you ever see the HBO special that Dylan did with the Heartbreakers, with whom he has toured? It was a dozen years ago, I guess. Even though I love The Band, I thought that the Heartbreakers and Dylan managed some fresh exploration of the music, and that it worked extremely well.
Of course, one of the terrible things is that nowadays, Dylan's voice is shot (too much cocaine screwing up his nose), and is terribly unreliable. He did pretty well for his last album, but I saw him on an MTV Unplugged several years ago, and it was very painful to listen to........... |
