<<The other thing to remember is that this was during a war. Not the tiny, unimportant, and not particularly violent [except to those involved, but compare them to Vietnam or the war of the Triple Alliance] civil wars in South America, but the huge, long and potentially devastating conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union.>>

Your point (that these smaller conflicts were unimportant) is correct only if you make the assumption that the Domino theory was untrue. Again, we were collectively herded to that position ('Domino theory is debunked') by institutions and people with intellectual and political sway at a time when, within the US and Western Europe, there was a struggle between acquiesence and resistance to the threats imposed by the Soviet regime. The Marxism/Leninism/Socialism doctrine of the 1900's was intrinsically internationalist: one of its most important tenets was that it must grow to encompass more and more societies, and that each socialist nation must provide a motive force to promoting revolution wherever possible. I learned this when working side by side with Cuban Army colonels who happened to be Colombian nationals that (at the moment) were masquerading as local civilian physicians collaborating with the missionaries.

Thankfully, our apoligism was overshadowed by the collapse of the Soviet system and the consequent revision of Marxist expansionist doctrines.

With regards to violence, it is always personal and extreme to those on the receiving end. I hope you never have to experience this.
