"2 Injured During Trinidad Celebration

Updated 1:44 PM ET December 3, 2000

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - Falling bullets fired by boxing fans celebrating Felix Trinidad's victory injured a man and an 11-year-old girl on Sunday, Puerto Rican police said.

The bullets injured Keishla Sanjurjo Gonzalez in the left arm and cut the face of Jose Luis Pagan, 44, after celebrants began firing handguns and semi-automatic weapons into the air in San Juan's Luis Llorens Torres housing project. Both were treated at hospitals and released.

Gunfire and fireworks could be heard throughout San Juan after Trinidad's victory over Fernando Vargas early Sunday morning. The match took place in Las Vegas, but thousands of Puerto Ricans watched on pay-per-view.

Afterward, fans waving Puerto Rico's red, white and blue flag from their car windows careened through the streets of San Juan, honking their horns.

Trinidad has become the city's favorite athlete. When he beat Oscar De La Hoya last year, tens of thousands of fans flocked to Puerto Rico's main airport to welcome him home, then accompanied him on a victory caravan through San Juan that froze traffic for hours.

Police said they were beefing up security at Luis Munoz Marin International Airport for Trinidad's return home Sunday night."
