So the thinly populated states of the South, the Great Plains and the West could elect the President, and the population centers of the Midwest, and the East and West Coasts could just cry in their beer.

I believe you are embarking on a bit of speculative fantasy.

If you hadn't noticed, New Mexico went to Gore (narrowly) 1.7 million voters. So did Oregon (3 million voters) and Rhode Island (1 million)

In addition, Vermont, Maine, Delaware, and Hawaii went to Gore. All of these states have only 3-4 electors, equivalent to the smallest states you claim are threatening to dominate the larger states.

But an even more telling map of how individual counties voted shows that Bush won the heaviest population base of Americans:

usatoday.com

That's 143 Americans in Republican counties vs 127 million in Democratic ones.

Now tell me who has the majority in this nation.

ON THE OTHER HAND, Gore failed to carry Tennessee, his home state. He also failed to carry Arkansas, Clinton's home state.

And some folks have made a wise observation that one should never be president if they are unable to carry their own home state.

If you think about that, it makes quite a bit of sense.

I think we should put that in as an amendment to the constitution.

Regards,

Ron
