in order to open Metastock files that contain intraday data you need the Pro version. I know that you're a QFeed user, but unfortunately Metastock Pro does not support QFeed as a data feed. Short of subscribing to eSignal there's two possible solutions to this problem. If you require realtime data then check out Dynastore which acts as an emulator of the eSignal interface for QFeed. If historical data is sufficient for your purposes there's a shareware tool called QCollector that let's you download historical intraday data from QFeed and saves it as Metastock files with configurable interval bars.

As for the backtesting, it can easily be done in Metastock. However, I don't think you can exclude specific time periods.
