Pearly, Bryans' actions in the last year or two of his life have left some with an unfair impression of the man; he was a powerful orator and very modern and progressive, despite the Scopes trial. He was Secretary of State under Wilson but resigned in protest in 1916 over early American involvement in the war.

The 1925 Scopes trial (happened in Dayton, Tenn. just a few miles from here) and Scopes, a schoolteacher was supported by the local "boomers" and town fathers (the little town had sixty 32nd degree Masons, an enormous quota for such a small town, who had been under attack from the pulpit by the Pentecostal and Primitve Baptist preachers from the surrounding hill country). A powerful defense was prepared for Scopes, including Clarence Darrow and Dudley Malone; the two most famous defense attorneys of the day. The Pentecostals recruited Bryan (a devout fundementalist) and the nations media rolled in in wagons, horseback and however they could get there.

In the end Bryan won and Scopes was found guilty and fined $100 (which was paid by the Baltimore Sun). Bryan died of a stroke five days later and in 1927 the Tennessee Supreme Court reversed the case on a technicality. Untill the OJ Simpson case THIS was the trial of the century.
