very impressive that you can distinguish one wood smoke from another. where i live, many people still heat with wood. we heated with it from '74 to '82 exclusively. after that we had both woodstove and gas heat, and the temptation on a cold morning to reach for that gas thermostat instead of building a fire in the stove was always great.

for the last 10 years we've had gas heat and a pellet stove. the compressed wood pellets burn so efficiently that they produce no smoke. the first time i fired it up i was unaware of that fact, and boy was i puzzled when i didn't see any smoke coming out of the chimney.

i understand that horse people are now using wood pellets in their horse's stall to soak up the urine. supposedly the pellets are cheaper and more absorbent than wood shavings or whatever product horse people use for this.

and thanks for jogging my memory vault with the wet wool smell, too
