Hi Redneck. Nice to meet you on this thread. Good question, as usual. I do not know the right answer, but I do not believe it would work on underground portions of subways unless the "shoe boxes" were installed at periodic intervals along the lines of track or other methods were employed to permit the signal to get to higher elevation antennas.
