The boldfaced paragraph jogged my memory about a conversation that a couple of fellow investors had with HK several months ago. Apparently, Greg Reyes used to visit HK and "pick his brain" in the days when QLGC had DELL's FC adapter business and BRCD was looking for a way to become DELL's switch vendor by optimizing their switches to work with the Q Logic components. If one also recalls that in a conference call prior to the ANCR merger, HK also claimed that the host bus adapter is selected before the FC switch into a SAN configuration and is much harder to replace than the switch due to the OEMs' extensive integration with software drivers,etc.. Take these 2 trains of thought and extrapolate them to QLGC's new 2 gig totally integrated SAN solution...What if an OEM who was using Q Logic's 1 gig host bus adapter now is faced with the opportunity to upgrade to the backward-compatible 2 gig host bus adapter and the switch is offered either as an imbedded/attached feature and/or there is a sales discount/incentive for the OEM to buy both components instead of just 1? Reminds me of how Microsoft stole market leadership of word processing from Word Perfect by "bundling" Word with Office which also helped Excel take market leadership away from Lotus 1-2-3. Not an exact analogy, but it is perhaps a viable speculation into a synergy that can be gained thru the Ancor acquisition.
