ARM's share price rose as much as 4 percent in London on the news, but then fell to 510 pence, 1 percent down on Friday's close.

The Cambridge-based chip designer gave no value for the deal, but said it would allow its core technology to join the existing range of Motorola chips, particularly for wireless products such as mobile phones.

The deal was an "excellent" one, according to chip industry analyst at Daiwa Research, Cristian Stoian.

He said it showed Motorola, normally a competitor to ARM in this field, had recognized ARM's technology had become the standard design for the wireless market. Customers had demanded it, he said.
