Buying power is always determined on the basis of the previous night's closing prices. A firm may decrease your buying power intra-day, but they may not increase it to more than would be permitted by the previous night's close. Day-trading margin is a world unto itself; I'll be getting into it later this week. I want to finish spreads and a little bit on hedges first.
