** IBM Pushes Picture-Perfect Display

IBM gets first place in the picture-perfect category with a new 200-pixel-per-inch flat-panel display that rivals a photograph in color, clarity, and resolution. The 22-inch display is capable of lighting up 9 million pixels to deliver a picture that's 12 times sharper than current desktop displays and 4.5 times sharper than the best quality high-definition television.

Medical applications that replace conventional X-rays with a digital alternative, product design and development, and scientific applications are among the initial uses for the display. The first customer is the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which will use the displays for 3-D simulations that show the effects of aging on nuclear weapons. The displays will replace wall-sized screens.

Under development since 1995, the active-matrix liquid-crystal display uses aluminum instead of molybdenum and tungsten, metals traditionally used in displays. Aluminum is a better conductor and is less expensive, aiding in the manufacturing of the low-cost,
high-resolution displays. - Ron Copeland
