You are to be highly commended for for your diligent volunteer work.
Obviously, you feel a responsibility to perform your assigned task with care and precision. Well, you see, I feel the same principle applies to voting. The latter is a precious right that we are granted, won and defended at the cost of shed blood since Revolutionary times.
I have no sympathy for citizens who take this right/privilege so casually as to do no preparation, or take no ordinary care, is exercising it. Let's face it, voting on a Votomatic punch machine is in no way a formidable, daunting task. Instructions provided are very clear. If one does encounter trouble, help is readily available.
In my view, a careless attempt to cast a vote forfeits the right. The answer to my question is, these "votes" were counted, and were assigned a value of zero, which is exactly what they were worth.
Your sympathy for students who do not follow instructions shows that you have a kind heart. Others might feel that learning the consequences of not following instructions is a valuable and necessary lesson that young people must be taught.
Best regards,
