NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Worldwide sales of semiconductors climbed 39 percent in October to $18.7 billion from $13.4 billion a year ago, an industry trade group said Monday.

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said chip sales were strong across all geographic markets and most product sectors, with record sales in flash, analog and other types of semiconductors used in computers and wireless devices.

SIA president George Scalise said that for 2000, the chip industry remained on track for an annual growth rate of 37.1 percent over 1999, and for the first time is expected to reach an industry sales record exceeding $200 billion.

For the month of October, chip sales in the Americas soared 41 percent to $5.9 billion; in Europe sales climbed 33 percent to $3.8 billion; Japan saw sales rocket 47 percent to $4.4 billion; and in Asia sales rose 35 percent to $4.6 billion.
