America West Airlines Announces Installation of Automatic ExternalDefibrillators on Aircraft

PHOENIX, Dec. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- America West Airlines (NYSE: AWA) announced today that it has installed the Agilent Technologies' Heartstream FR2 Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) on its fleet of Boeing and Airbus aircraft. AEDs are compact, electronic devices used to restore the heart's natural rhythm in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest.

"America West Airlines has chosen the latest technology available for this lifesaving equipment," said Anthony Mule, senior vice president, customer service. "Installing AEDs on our aircraft is one more way that the airline has enhanced its commitment to customers. The AEDs offer customers a higher degree of comfort, knowing that the airline provides the technology and training for emergency medical situations."

America West has incorporated a training program for proper use of the AED device into its core and recurrent training program for flight attendants. Flight attendants also receive training in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and first aid. If a medical situation were to develop in flight, the flight attendants would have additional support by phone through MedAire's MedLink emergency telemedicine center, which is staffed by board certified emergency physicians.

America West Airlines also has elected to install specially designed Cardiac Medical Kits (CMKs) on its aircraft. The CMKs contain items and medications used to support the use of AEDs. Doctors or other qualified medical professionals on board the aircraft will be able to use the CMKs to assist the flight attendants as they perform this lifesaving procedure.

America West Airlines, the nation's ninth-largest carrier, serves 91 destinations with more than 890 daily departures in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. With its codeshare partners, America West serves more than 145 destinations worldwide. America West Airlines is a wholly owned subsidiary of America West Holdings Corporation, an aviation and travel services company with 1999 sales of $2.2 billion.

This press release, as well as releases issued in the past year by America West Holdings and its affiliates, can be accessed on the America West Internet site at www.americawest.com.

NOTE: Please note that for proper spelling, the name Anthony Mule, in the second paragraph, should have an accent mark over the "e".
