Your coffee as an inflation index sounds right on to me. With the number of people I know that keep their productivity up and lives running by drinking coffee, it's possible that coffee beans are going to replace gold as the monetary standard. The implications of a coffee shortage on the economics of this country are far more frightening and real than a gold shortage at this point. Imagine the majority of the people unable to get their coffee fix - caffeine withdrawal headaches and a sharp drop in productivity. I wonder how much coffee the central banks have stashed away. Do you want to start hoarding? :)
