| Well, that is, of course, the rub. Basically, we are subject to a calculation of probabilities about most things, and as we get more knowledge, we may need to revise our views more than once. Not only is direct experience not perfectly reliable or transparent to interpretation, but we depend on information from sources like books and television, which may or may not be accurate. Thus, we are in the position of having to evaluate the trustworthiness of different sources of knowledge. Some things, we can be very confident about: the Earth revolves around the Sun,Paris is the capital of France, America just had an election. For other things, there is an irreducible element of surmise, of unverifiable intuition, of just plain personal experience that cannot be adequately scrutinized in a public venue.
