The Gore's family photo album contains a picture of Al's
great-great grandfather, Gunther Gore.

On the back of the picture is this inscription:
"Gunther Gore; horse thief, sent to Tennessee Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Tennessee Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889."

Recently during a campaign stop, Al told of his roots in
Tennessee: "My great-great-grandfather was a famous rancher
in early Tennessee. His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Tennessee railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life in service to the government, before finally returning to work in the
railroad. In 1887, he led a key role in the renowned
Pinkerton Detective Agency's investigation of a rash of train robberies and thus helped bring an end to a reign of terror. Unfortunately Gunther's life was cut short in 1889. He was killed during an important civic function when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed."
