I offer to the thread a small nugget of wisdom I learned a number of years ago. It may well be known to most of the astute people on this thread, but my experience shows that even many educated have not thought about it.

The equivalent of the saying "the exception proves the rule"
in French is "the exception confirms the rule". This is a bit more clear, as the premise here is that once you find what is different in the exceptional case, the general rule is made stronger. Thus XOM in fact confirms the rule, as you state, for the reason that it a company unlike most others for being largest and having at its disposal tools that others don't have.
