If both the processor and heatsink are very smooth then very little is needed. Most of the reviews I found were very skeptical of pads. They seem to be mostly for ease of installation. Some of the newer ones worked much better if "burned in" at perhaps 60C (ie. turn the fan off and it warms up fast) to allow a phase transformation. -PT
