SAN MATEO, Calif. — Ericsson and Juniper Networks
Inc. have agreed to pool $50 million during 2001 to fund a
joint venture that will develop routers for mobile networks.

The arrangement extends the companies' existing alliance
to build routers for traditional networks. The joint venture
hopes to prepare for the infrastructure that will be required
if 3G wireless services take off, said Scott Kriens, chief
executive of Juniper.

Specifically, the venture seeks to develop a gateway
system, compliant with Internet Protocol version 6, that
would link cellular basestations with the Internet backbone,
Kriens said.

The new company, 60 percent owned by Ericsson and 40
percent by Juniper, will design routers solely for Ericsson's
customers. Ericsson will use existing product lines from
both companies until the joint venture's first products arise.

In a conference call with analysts, Kriens dodged questions regarding the
planned venture's probable revenue. "Our focus is not so much on the revenue
but on the power it brings to the portfolio of both companies,” he said.

The joint venture has a board of directors drawn from the two parent
companies. A chief executive officer will be chosen from Ericsson, and a chief
operating officer will be selected from Juniper.

Looks like they are still in developing. Danny
