It was never clear that the serpent was Satan - if it was important, why wasn't that amplified. The bible doesn't even mention Satan much really considering how Fundies consider him the cornerstone of evil.

Lucifer is never mentioned by name except tangentially and colorfully. Satan (who we can only assume is Lucifer) seems to hang around and chat with God like old golfing buddies. There is that conversation between God and Satan in Job 1:6 where God tells Satan to go mess with Job's life. That kind of sucks. God also has to ASK Satan what has he been up to. That seems lame for the Almighty. Satan also tries to tempt Jesus (who is also God, right?). THAT shouldn't work, should it?

I think the following treatise is the best work describing Satan's role in astrophysics and the creation of the asteroid belt that I've ever read. Truly revealing. Why didn't they teach that in science is all I can say.
