Dear Scumbria: Global Thermo Nuclear War is won by not fighting it. On a more typical case, quitting drinking (or using any other mind altering drug) and then driving is a great way to keep living instead of fighting to keep doing it (I know quite a few people who lost their lives that way (just look at your local newspaper or news broadcast)). You want Alan Greenspan to quit fighting inflation (the last war in your words) instead of continuing. A good gambit in chess is to set it up so that an opponent fights to take your queen while losing many pieces, and later, the game. There are many times where continuing to fight make you lose a lot more than winning a battle and that quitting when the odds are against you to leave enough to win when the odds are with you is a tried and true method. It has even been used successfully a few times in Presidential Elections. Yes, you can win while quitting and lose by fighting on. Pete
