Hi Frank:

Re. pulse systems. This is what is called impulse radio
or ultrawideband (UWB) systems. They work with very low
power (and thus short range) and use somewhere
between 2 to 4GHZ of bandwidth. UWB companies include:
Time Domain, XtremeSpectrum, Fantasma Networks, Aether
Wire and a few other small fishes. Since UWB
operates within already licensed spectrum (but below the
noise level) it requires a special FCC ruling. Up to
this point the FCC has approved tests (there is a worry
about interference with GPS systems) to check whether UWB
creates interference problems. It is widely expected
the tests will be successful.

UWB has the potential to offer much larger capacity
than Bluetooth.

Best regards,

Bernard Levy
