Scumbria-- Re: I don't get it. How do you lose by fighting? You lose by quitting.

You've never heard of "He that fights and runs away May turn and fight another day?" Part of being successful in anything is picking your fights correctly. I think Gore was toast as a future national candidate as soon as he lost, but if had managed to wage a decent campaign and been more likeable, the appropriate strategy was to concede and wage the legal war in the background. He would have had a much better image, and if it later turned out that he had indeed won Florida, he would have pretty much been guaranteed the victory in 2004, even if he were not able to get in all the legal challenges in time for the 2000 election. As certain Democratic party officials were pointing out over the weekend, the votes will ultimately be counted under the Florida open election laws. By fighting this thing even though it looks he will probably lose, he has destroyed himself as a future candidate if (as I believe is most probably the case) he did indeed lose Florida by a tiny margin.
