PCCW tight-lipped about further NOW development
By Simon Marshall, Total Telecom

05 December 2000

Pacific Century CyberWorks (PCCW) is planning to further develop its Network of the World (NOW) Internet television network throughout Asia, according to Tuesday¡¦s Hong Kong iMail daily newspaper.

NOW has been criticized because it only has English language content for the Asia region, and was thought to be undergoing a down-scaling by the Asian media giant.

But a spokesperson for PCCW told the iMail, ¡§We are working on the second generation [of] NOW, but I can¡¦t comment on it because it is not officially announced.¡¨

She added PCCW has spent about US$179 million on NOW so far. Coupled with PCCW¡¦s chairman Richard Li¡¦s statement at the Telecom Asia 2000 show Sunday his company would spend no more than US$200 million a year on its B2C business due to loan commitments, it seems any improved offering will depend on how much he¡¦s willing to commit to NOW to make it more successful.

There was no indication of how much will be spent or when the face-lift is expected to be launched.

Separately, PCCW Japan announced Monday it had paid US$2.8 million for a 51% stake in mobile and Internet content firm B-Factory to provide entertainment services to PCCW¡¨s regional broadband mobile offering.
