Intel CEO Sees Record 4Q Sales Despite Industry Slowdown
HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--Intel Corp. (INTC) President and Chief Executive Officer Craig Barrett Tuesday stood by his earlier forecast of record fourth-quarter revenue for the chip-making giant, despite sounding a note of caution when discussing a slowdown in U.S. and European markets.
In an interview on the sidelines of the ITU Telecom Asia 2000 conference in Hong Kong, the Intel chief said he still expects record revenue in the fourth quarter, while long-term prospects remain strong for the semi-conductor industry.

At the same time, however, Barrett noted a slowdown in the industry as a whole and predicted that sales in the fourth quarter won't be "as strong as we've seen in the past several years," calling it a "relatively blase marketplace."

Barrett said sales in Europe in the third quarter led Intel to lower its forecasts, "while numerous reports from the U.S. marketplace show sales are not as robust" as they have been in the past.

However, "Asia is still relatively strong from a sales standpoint," he added.
