Qualcomm's Jacobs on China Support for CDMA Standard: Comment

Hong Kong, Dec. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Qualcomm Inc.'s Chief Executive Irwin Jacobs comments on the use of the U.S. company's wireless phone standard in China. Qualcomm said yesterday it had won China's official backing for the standard on which the country's No. 2 provider of mobile service, China Unicom Ltd., plans to base a nationwide network.

On Qualcomm's establishment of a development center in Beijing to promote its code division multiple access technology:

``One of the functions will be to help on investigating both existing 3G services and applications. It will be multimillions of dollars that we are investing.

On winning the backing of China's Ministry of Information Industry, the government body responsible for communications strategy and policy:

``I think this is another important step in moving ahead with CDMA in China. There has been some question as to whether there was appropriate government support. I think this MOU (memorandum of understanding) puts that to bed.

On investments in CDMA equipment:

``There should be very substantial CDMA infrastructure operating in China...in the second half of the year. We will be participating in working in China to help with the testing they desire.

``There have been some discussions that the orders that would be placed earlier would be for infrastructure that would support about 10 million subscribers. We are not sure of that until the number of orders are placed.''
