Korea to Announce Phone License Winners Dec 15, Yonhap Says

--From AOL. Combined with Fed meeting on 12/17, options expiration, and election events on 12/12 and 12/18, this should be fun!-- Cooters

Seoul, Dec. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Korea's Ministry of Information and Communication will announce who will receive one of three licenses to provide new cellular phone services on Dec. 15, five days earlier than planned, Yonhap News said, citing an unidentified ministry official.

A group led by Hanaro Telecom Inc. submitted a bid for a license using a technology called code division multiple access 2000. Three other groups -- led by Korea Telecom Corp., SK Telecom Co. and LG Group -- submitted proposals based on rival W-CDMA technology.

The government said it will disqualify the weakest proposal among those bidding with the same technology in an attempt to insure that one group would choose CDMA2000. Analysts said Hanaro's proposal is unlikely to meet the minimum criteria. Winning bidders will have to pay a 1.3 trillion won ($1.1 billion) license fee.
