Watching someone split wood is an enjoyable way of passing the afternoon. I watched both feet come off the ground when taking an axe to a particularly nasty cross-grained chunk. I thought I was witnessing some theatrics, but when I later hid behind the curtains and peeked, the same method was used: Gentle words; prop wood on chopping block; lift axe high; motivate axe downward with such force feet are airborne; moment of reflection and cussing; fetch missed piece of unsplit wood; wrestle axe out of chopping block; more unkind words; repeat loop until: Wood splits; axe head flies off; axe handle breaks; my laughter is heard; or coffee is brewed.

Meanwhile, I do my part. I move the little lever on the bottom of the thermostat a quarter-inch to the right.

P.S. I also know the sound of defeat: The chain-saw starts and the wood destined for splitting gets sawn into pieces. And the look of satisfaction!!!
