WASHINGTON -- The Federal Aviation Administration proposed nearly $1 million in fines against Alaska Airlines for maintenance violations uncovered during an audit of the company's operations.

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- The investment vehicle of Bill Gates said Thursday it purchased a 5.3 percent stake in Alaska Air Group, a stock that is hovering near its 52-week low.

Cascade Investment LLC, based in Kirkland, Wash., did not reveal in Securities and Exchange Commission documents the specific prices or dates that it purchased the 1.4 million shares.
