Nokia aims to be No. 1 in CDMA market

Reuters Company News - December 05, 2000 06:37

HELSINKI, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Finnish telecom equipment maker Nokia , the world's largest and most profitable mobile phone maker, said on Tuesday it aimed to be number one in the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) handset market.

"The number one market share (position) is a very attainable position," Larry Paulson, Nokia Mobile Phones' vice-president of CDMA, told the company's annual meeting of analysts in London.

Paulson said one step toward this position was a launch of a full range of CDMA handsets in Korea slated for the first and second quarters of 2001.

CDMA trails GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) as the world's most popular mobile standard, and is popular in North and South America as well as parts of Asia like Korea. Top players include world number two cellphone maker U.S. Motorola .
