Re: Makes me sick

Yeah, yeah, Jesse is a grandstanding leech who can't stand the idea of getting off the Clinton gravy train.

But wait a minute. For the better part of this century there have been systematic efforts by Southern states to prevent blacks from voting or otherwise disenfranchise them. These abuses are long term and profusely documented. The state of Florida is no exception to this pattern and the some of the abuses continued right through this election.
-police intimidation of voters around polling places
-poll workers demanding picture ID, Voter ID cards and asking other personal questions not authorized by law, using any pretext to deny voting
-translators being denied access to the polling booth with non-english speaking citizens even after showing copies of the law permitting this
-journalists being threatened with arrest while documenting these activities
-poll workers refusing to offer any written documentation of their refusals(also against the law)
-ballot boxes impounded by police as "evidence" and not counted
-poll workers claiming voters were on a "felon" list(the state of Florida put 12000 people on that list who had no criminal record)
-black precincts still using the oldest voting machines with the highest error rates(higher even than Palm Beach county)insuring that black votes, through no fault of the voter, will not be counted.

Shall I go on? Only through the passage of the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act were the older, cruder forms of disenfranchisement limited. Now we have more sophisticated and subtle forms to deal with.

So if Jesse Jackson wasn't there, who would be? Or would you be happy to see this type of stuff go on in silence, as long as it's not in your own back yard? If it was happening to Asians in SF, would Jesse Jackson be there? Probably not. It would be an Asian version. If it was Vietnamese in Louisiana, who should stand up for them? I see no national or even any state organizations acting as a watchdog and voter ombudsman. I see no Judicial Watch in the trenches protecting the rights of voters.

The right calls Jesse Jackson divisive. Since when have we ever been united, least of all on racial issues. Ending Jackson's so-called divisive activities(yeah, he IS a loudmouth opportunist sometimes) only means ONE thing to the Right. Silence him. And who will step into that vacuum? Dubya? Don't make me laugh.
