Dan3: P4 is a gaming/multimedia chip, while Itanium is a data cruncher.

I don't necessarily agree... Both have extremely high memory bandwidths, which is good for servers and crunchers. The P4 has exceptional double precision floating point performance, which could make it a real hit in the scientific community.

The point here is that there seems to be an overwhelming overlap between the performance of the two processors. Both require rewriting applications, both have their strengths in floating point math and memory bandwidth.

When (if) the Itanium is finally commercially available, the P4 will be available in MP configurations - just like the Itanium.

The way I see it, the P4 will (eventually) attack all current x86 strongholds, as well as some of the more high-end scientific areas currently held by "ex-DEC". In order for the Itanium to be successful, it has to place itself well above the P4 in terms of performance. This places it head to head with ex-DEC, HP and IBM. One or two of these may choose to drop their own line of processors, but only if the Itanium really performs.

While Itanium has been delayed in the extreme, Intel can probably bank on ex-DEC et. al. screwing up almost as much. There have been some hints lately that both IBM and ex-DEC are finally getting their acts together, but can they keep the focus?
