CPQ will invest up to US$30 million in 2001, through collaborations and joint ventures, in a bid to boost its presence in China's fast-growing telecoms market.

IMO, they want a piece of the CDMA pie in China & are willing to buy their way in. QCOM has a deal with CHU to build a system capable of servicing 10 million customers by end of 2001. China's MII signed a MOU with QCOM which is the gov't saying OK, go ahead. There is scuttlebutt about another mobile carrier building a CDMA system for 75 million customers..... but there are no agreements or MOU's..... at this time.....

FWIW, QCOM has about 71 million subs worldwide, with very rapid growth. Even if China only adds 10 million subs by next year, in a country with bazillions of peoples everywhere & all over the place, this is a lot of cashola going to the bottom line........ And since CDMA is the cat's meow of wireless tech, with best 'o breed for capacity in mega big cities & best 'o breed for wireless data/internet in a country with few landlines; China will want/need to add a few more subs..... like 500 million of 'em in 5 yrs or so.

If CPQ can get in on this action, they get dim sum too :-o
