Q3 DOCSIS MODEM SHIPMENTS TOP 2 MILLION
Motorola Extends Lead in Cable Modem Market, Toshiba and Thomson Gain Ground

According to vendor reports to CABLE DATACOM NEWS, worldwide shipments for
standards-based DOCSIS cable modems surged to 2 million units in the third quarter, a
67 percent increase over second-quarter shipments. In North America, DOCSIS
shipments reached 1.4 million units in Q3, nearly twice the Q2 total.

Motorola Inc.'s Broadband Communications Sector extended its DOCSIS dominance in
Q3, claiming 540,000 modem shipments in North America and another 310,000 units in
international markets. Motorola doubled its second-quarter shipments to secure a
37.9-percent share of the North American DOCSIS market and a 41.9-percent share of
the worldwide market.

Toshiba America Information Systems turned up the volume in Q3, shipping 295,000
modems in North America to claim the number-two position with a 20.7-percent market
share.

Thomson Consumer Electronics recovered from a critical Q2 component shortage to
post strong sales in the third quarter. Thomson shipped 219,000 DOCSIS modems in
North America, more than doubling its Q2 sales, for a 15.4-percent share of the market.
The company shipped another 46,000 units overseas.

3Com's worldwide DOCSIS modem shipments were essentially flat in Q3, although its
proportional share of shipments in North America grew by 20 percent to 204,000 units,
equal to a 14.3 percent share of the market. 3Com shipped another 52,000 DOCSIS
modems overseas.
