BEA Unveils BEA WebLogic Server 6.0, the Next Generation of the World's Number One Java Application Server

New Release Extends Server's Core Functionality, Combining
Capabilities of Web, Application, Messaging, Transaction, and Integration

Servers in One Powerful Platform

SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- BEA Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:BEAS), one of the world's leading e-business infrastructure software companies, today announced the general availability of BEA WebLogic Server 6.0, the industry's most advanced Java application server for building, running, and future-proofing high-volume, mission-critical e-business applications. BEA WebLogic Server is the standards-based, e-commerce software engine that has been selected by the majority of the Fortune Global 500, Fortune e-50, Forbes Super 100, and Business 2.0 100. This new release extends the product's core functionality with the latest J2EE innovations, a wide breadth of industrial-strength, "mainframe-class" functionality, and substantial manageability benefits across the complete e-business application lifecycle.

BEA WebLogic Server has long been the Java application server of choice. In the past year alone, it has won eight best-in-class awards. It leads the market with a 2-to-1 advantage over its nearest competitor. It is the most innovative Java server, leading the way in J2EE certification and implementation -- arguably doing more than any other product or company to make Java a viable standard for e-business. And it is the choice of Java developers worldwide because of its legendary ease of use and robustness.

Today, BEA WebLogic has just gotten better -- not incrementally, but with an important leap forward. It is more powerful, yet even easier to use. It provides broader support for e-business, yet with even greater manageability. BEA WebLogic Server 6.0 speeds time-to-market, boosts developer productivity, saves IT costs, and eases integration challenges by combining -- in one server -- the capabilities of an application server, Web server, messaging server, transaction server, and integration server, all under the banner of WebLogic, the most trusted brand in e-business infrastructure, and all built in the open standard of pure Java.

"To future proof their e-businesses, our customers look to BEA to provide a platform on which they can build value-added services without worrying about the underlying infrastructure," said Alfred Chuang, BEA co-founder, president and COO. "We built BEA WebLogic Server 6.0 to deliver a unique blend of functionality that incorporates the latest innovations in e-business software development and the legendary reliability of multi-million dollar mainframe computer systems. The 6.0 release sets a new benchmark for core application server functionality -- making it easier and faster to build a reliable, integrated e-business."

Beta Customers Emphasize Business Benefits of BEA WebLogic Server 6.0

BEA customers such as ClickAction, Deutsche Banc Alex Brown, Loudcloud and The Hartford Financial Services Group are among the many companies already using this next-generation platform as part of the BEA WebLogic Server 6.0 Beta Program.

"BEA WebLogic Server is a key component of our Application Server SmartCloud services, which offers Internet businesses reliable and powerful technology options for their Internet infrastructure operations," said David Posey, vice president of research and development at Loudcloud, Inc., a software infrastructure service provider. "BEA consistently delivers technology that our customers demand. That technology, coupled with Loudcloud services and expertise, allows customers to reap valuable benefits such as our 100 percent scheduled uptime guarantee and dynamic scalability."

"BEA WebLogic Server is meeting the needs of our application developers for a Java platform that is easy to use, supports standards, and provides industrial-strength scalability, availability, security and transaction and data integrity," said George Grant, senior vice president of marketing at ClickAction, Inc. (NASDAQ:CLAC), a leader in permission-based email marketing/e-messaging. "The latest J2EE innovations included in BEA WebLogic Server 6.0, such as EJB 2.0, will enable us to expand our customer relationship management solutions to include profiling and segmenting, content publishing, campaign management, cross channel deployment and reporting."

"The powerful new features in BEA WebLogic Server 6.0, such as the new simplified Web-based management console, give us an easy-to-use, centralized management interface for configuring and monitoring our servers," said Bryan Blair, chief technology officer of The Hartford Fidelity and Bonding Company, a division of The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc., one of the nation's largest international insurance and financial services operations. "We are also excited about the enhanced XML support, which will allow us to quickly develop new applications and bring new services to our customers, which is key to our business as an international surety provider."

Industrial-Strength E-Business Functionality Built in Pure Java

BEA WebLogic Server 6.0 now incorporates the technical underpinnings of the renowned transaction reliability of BEA Tuxedo, the most widely deployed distributed transaction server in the world, to deliver a new pure-Java distributed transaction engine that enables customers to build and deploy a new class of transaction-intensive applications built on the J2EE standard platform with "Tuxedo-class" transaction management. This distributed transaction manager provides the robust "two-phase commit" transactions required for today's highly complex, distributed e-commerce applications. Customers can now build these sophisticated transactional applications with all the benefits of J2EE, combining the investment protection of an open standards-based approach and faster time to market afforded by Java with the proven reliability of the BEA WebLogic E-Business Platform(TM).

In addition, the core BEA WebLogic Server now includes:

-- Simplified manageability, usability and installation with a new Web-based management console based on the Java Management Extension

(JMX) framework that enables system administrators to configure and manage individual or multiple servers at anytime, from anywhere, using a single Web interface;

-- An integrated messaging system based on Java Messaging Service (JMS) for high-performance, scalable messaging, allowing distributed computing systems to easily communicate and share data -- critical functions for integrating data and processes across highly distributed
applications;

-- Enhanced XML capabilities for flexible content presentation services, business-to-business integration and enterprise application integration; and

-- Certified J2EE compliance, with the added benefits of BEA's continued J2EE leadership and innovation which helps assure application and systems interoperability for customers and independent software vendors by complying with Java standards, which helps provide investment protection in code, skills and product interoperability, plus a preview into the future of J2EE with EJB 2.0 and JMX.

In addition, in conjunction with today's announcement, several of BEA's independent software vendors (ISVs) and application software partners (ASPs) are announcing support for and building solutions with BEA WebLogic Server 6.0, including BMC Software, Manage.com, PentaSafe, TogetherSoft, and Wily Technology. (See related news announcements issued today by these partners.) BEA has one of the largest ISV support communities of any application server vendor, providing customers with the choice and flexibility to build and buy e-business solutions with a single, integrated platform that can be used across the enterprise.

Availability

BEA WebLogic Server 6.0 will be generally available on December 18, 2000 via download from www.bea.com.
