I've been suggesting this ever since Buchanon came on national television and informed the public that he got Gore's votes. Yes, Bush could have been an instant American hero had he done that then. Instead, he tried to hide behind his power plays--his Floridian brother-governor and the secretary of state who co-chaired his campaign. What Bush has done has certainly been less than honorable, especially the PR war that his campaign lambasted against Gore and the Democrats while attempting to bully his way into the presidency.
Ironically, had Bush done this after Buchanon's announcement he would have been guaranteed becoming president at a later date. As things stand now, thousands of his votes, just like the thousands of Gore votes, might be cast out due to technicalities, similar technicalities the Democrats encountered, and he might actually lose to Gore in Year 2000, and he'll have no table set for him in a future race as more and more about this election seeps into the public consciousness.
Yup! Bush could have been better. On the other hand, I always knew he wasn't up to the task, and his behavior after the November 7th election confirms this. |
