TOKYO, Japan -- Taiwan will become the world's second-biggestmarket for semiconductor equipment makers in 2000, according to a trade organization here today.
Taiwan, which dominates the chip foundry industry and makes DRAM and other chips, is estimated to hit a $9.78 billion equipment market, surpassing Japan this year and through 2003, according to the mostly recently released figures by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), based in San Jose.
For 2000, Taiwan accounts for 21% of the worldwide equipment market, while Japan makes up 19%, SEMI said. North America makes up 26%, or $12.15 billion, they added.
The island, where hundreds of semiconductor manufacturers locate in the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park, is projected to reach $15.77 billion in the equipment market in 2003, closing its gap with North America's $17.26 billion, SEMI said. That of Japan will total $12.1 billion, rising from $11.46 billion a year earlier. |
