<any rise in the price of silver will accelerate the conversion to digital. A rise in the cost of film and paper will impact the poorest counties before the richest. So a rise in the price of silver contains the seeds of its own demise.>

I don't think that this true. The cost of silver in the fabrication of films is negligeable. Eastman Kodak uses 65 millions ounces of silver per year I guess.. that is a cost of $300 millions plus... I gues you know how many billions dollars of film Eastman Kodak is selling?

I think this debate is sterile. We all know that digital will take some silver out of the current consumption in developed countries. Maybe as much as 50% in the next 10 years. So what ? Growth of photographic uses in undeveloped countries as well as industrial uses worldwide will easily fill that gap.

Keep in mind that the current supply-demand deficit is close to 150 millions ounces.... this id 60% of the photographic use. In other words, even if by some miracle, silver usages in photography is cut by half next year, there would still be a deficit.
