Tippet, there is a big difference; CO2 is inert and will not oxidise, it requires external energy (sunlight) in the exceedingly complicated process of photosynthesis to reduce CO2 and seperate the carbon which remains largely in the plant material while the O2 is liberated. Much of the earths carbon is tied up in carbonaceous rocks, most of which was put there over the eons by organic processes.

Methane(CH4) will oxidise in the environment over time (of course producing CO2). Natural gas is largely methane.
