Bank Set Ablaze in EU Summit Clashes

NICE, France (Reuters) - Several thousand activists aiming to stop a European Union (news - web sites) summit Thursday ran riot in the streets around the conference center, setting fire to a bank and daubing storefronts with revolutionary slogans.

Hundreds of riot police held the anti-globalization protesters away from the summit venue, but the acrid smoke from their repeated tear gas volleys wafted over to the fortress-like building and irritated arriving delegates.

Rounds of stun grenades blasted away in the side streets and police vans rushed reinforcements to positions near the summit venue just before leaders arrived around 9:30 a.m. (3:30 a.m. EST).

Police kept one road clear for EU leaders and national delegations to arrive by car for the summit, but nearby streets were packed with noisy demonstrators and littered with tear gas canisters and placards dropped in the confusion.

``We want to block the summit,'' said one masked protester. ''Europe is not a piece of merchandise.''

Nice city officials said about 20 police were lightly injured in the clashes and seven protesters taken into custody.

At intersections near the center, the protesters -- some armed with baseball bats and Molotov cocktails --
