Alcatel wins multi-million dollar ADSL contract from SingTel

Contract is SingTel's fourth to Alcatel for its ADSL network

ITU Telecom Asia Hong Kong, 7 December 2000-Alcatel, the world leader in
asymmetrical digital subscriber line (ADSL)high-speed Internet access technology,
announced today that it has won a multi-million US dollar contract to supply additional
ADSL lines to Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel)for its broadband
access service. This is the fourth time that Alcatel has been awarded a contract to
supply ADSL lines to SingTel's broadband network.

The first contract was awarded in 1997, when SingTel Magix was launched. Alcatel
won a second contract in February 1999, and a third contract in May 2000.

Mr Bill Hope, SingTel's Executive Vice-President (Network)said, "We have been
using Alcatel's ADSL solution since inception in November 1997. This new order
of Alcatel ADSL lines signifies our continuing confidence in their products."

Mr Olivier Picard, Alcatel Vice-President (South East Asia), said, "We are pleased
to have been awarded this new contract by SingTel. Alcatel is the world leader in
the ADSL equipment market with 55 per cent share - more than three times that of
our nearest competitor"

"But we never rest on our laurels. We continually strive to improve our integrated
products and solutions which we offer to our valued customers such as SingTel.
Because of our commitment to further improving our world-leading products, we
have been extending our lead over our competitors. This new order from SingTel
further increases that lead."

Besides SingTel, Alcatel has delivered and installed its ADSL equipment to Bell
Canada, Belgacom (Belgium), British Telecom, France Telecom, PT Telkom
(Indonesia), Telefonica (Spain), Telecom Italia, Telia (Sweden)and American
operators Ameritech, BellSouth, Pacific Bell and SouthWestern Bell. Alcatel has also
successfully installed ADSL networks in China, Korea, Japan and Denmark.
