Ciena Earnings Beat Wall Street Forecasts

LINTHICUM, Md. (Reuters) - Telecommunications equipment maker Ciena Corp.
(NasdaqNM:CIEN - news) reported fourth-quarter earnings and revenues on Thursday that
beat Wall Street expectations, and the company forecast 2001 revenue growth that would
top analysts' estimates.

Ciena, which makes equipment that expands the capacity of fiber-optic networks, reported pro forma net earnings of $41.3
million, or 14 cents a diluted share, excluding a provision for doubtful accounts and payroll tax on stock options.

The company reported net income of $4.7 million, or 2 cents a diluted share, in the year-ago period.

Analysts had forecast earnings of 12 cents a share, according to research firm First Call/Thomson Financial. Revenues were
$287.6 million, more than double the $141.4 million posted a year ago. The First Call estimate had been $277.77 million.

Ciena said it expected its 2001 revenues to rise 75 to 85 percent. The First Call projection for 2001 revenues is $1.405 billion.
Ciena's new guidance would be a range of $1.502 billion to $1.589 billion, 7 to 13 percent higher than the First Call number.
