Through the first half of 2000, the total number of cellular users in Asia/Pacific reached 188 million subscribers. Cellular subscriber growth continued to accelerate in China, which topped 60.6 million subscribers at the end of June, and at its current rate, the country is projected to pass 76 million subscribers by the end of this year.
``China's second carrier, Unicom, is starting to realize the benefits of improving network coverage, as well as better marketing and distribution arrangements,'' said Ann Liang, industry analyst for Gartner Dataquest's Asia/Pacific cellular phone research group. ``Unicom now has 18 percent of the national subscriber base, which represents a critical level of market share and, with the help of favorable government policies, particularly on pricing, it is increasingly able to compete on a more equal footing with China Mobile.''

TITLE : China Unicom Mobile Users Top 15 Million
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- October 24, 2000 (BEIJING) -- China Unicom, China's second-largest mobile telecommunication operator, garnered 15 million mobile phone users by the end of September, making up 21.5 percent of China's mobile phone market share.
China Unicom witnessed rapid growth this year, said an official from the firm, noting that in the past nine months, the firm has had 10.11 million new users.
While attracting more users, the firm also extended its network coverage to 227 cities in the country and opened its GSM roaming business to 23 countries and regions in the world.
China Unicom has also spared no efforts to develop new service items. It has cooperated with the Construction Bank of China to provide e-banking services, which enables customers to use their mobile phone to trade foreign currencies and securities.
